The courtesan was one of the most accomplished women of her time. She was well-read, well-educated, and well-mannered at a time when most women could do no more than read a Psaltary and bear children.
These women were dinner companions, entertainers, singers, poets, and lovers to some of the most prominent men of the period. They were trained in many arts, only one being the art of love. They held parties, and made more than one lord envious of the current patron. A courtesan was an attainable dream. She exhumed charm, lust, and opulence. Men came to her to experience the fantasy of love and knowledge their wives could not supply them with. They presented her with gifts, and she, in turn, would consider their proposals. They held power when women were allowed none.

Men lose more conquests by their own awkwardness than by any virtue in woman.

" Thus he that overruled I oversway'd,

Leading him prisoner in a red rose chain;

Strong-tempered steel his stronger strength obey'd,

Yet he was servile to my coy disdain.

O, be not proud, nor brag not of they might,

For mastering her that foil'd the god of fight!..."        excerpts from !~Venus & Adonis~

Lucia Isabella Di Cipriani de Venetie. Guild Mistress

This is the very ecstasy of love,

                  Whose violent property

                                   fordoes itself,

And leads the will to desperate undertakings

                   as oft as any passions under heaven

                                   That does afflict our natures"  (Hamlet)

"  Fondling, 'she saith, 'since Ihave hemm'd thee here

Within the circuit of this ivory pale,

I'll be a park, and thou shalt be my deer;

Feed where thou wilt, on mountain or in dale;

Graze on my lips; and if those hills be dry,

Stray lower, where the pleasant fountains lie. .."    ~W.S.~
